My advice for new plant parents! These are the houseplant care tips I wish I knew sooner. This will be beneficial for you if you’re someone who has just started getting into plants!
While each plant is different and has its own set of needs, what I am covering is general care. The things I’ve picked up along the journey of years of plant collecting and much trial and error. I hope that they make your plant care journey smoother and even more rewarding!
1. Invest in Grow Lights
The most important aspect of successful plant care is providing the right amount of light. I used to accept that my plants drastically slowed their growth throughout the fall and winter months, when the days are shorter and natural light was scarce. I thought that grow lights were for professional growers and for some reason thought they were a lot more complicated than they actually are.
Now that I have seen the amazing difference that they have made in my plants growth, I can’t stop sharing how helpful I think they are for everyone! I love that there are so many options available too. There are so many sizes, styles and price points that you can fit into your specific budget/needs.
Whether you have low-light spaces or want to supplement natural light, investing in quality grow lights is a game-changer!
2. Upgrade Your Soil Game
Bagged soil is a good starting point, but to take your plant care to the next level, consider upgrading it. Adding chunky elements like perlite or orchid bark improves aeration and drainage, preventing waterlogged roots. This simple adjustment can make a noticeable difference in the overall health of your plants.
3. Watering Confidence
Watering can be intimidating for beginners, but here’s the secret—don’t be afraid to fully saturate your plants, as long as you have proper drainage. Water should flow through the pot, ensuring that the entire root system receives hydration. I used to chronically under water my plants because I had heard it’s better to under water than over water. While that is true, I wasn’t allowing my plants to fully hydrate and therefore stunting their growth. Once I corrected this, I’m seeing my houseplants thrive and want this for you too!
I used to have a set watering day once per week, but now I just go around and check the dampness of the soil to see if any need more water. I swear by this and have gotten to know my plants so much better by taking this time to look at them at least once or twice a week.
4. Feed your plants!
Many people stop fertilizing their houseplants during the fall and winter months. But our houseplants are in a controlled environment, so they continue to grow in spite of the seasons. And if they’re growing, they need nutrients! This is especially true if you have grow lights. By adding fertilizer and grow lights, you will be blown away with all of the growth during the dead of winter. Fertilizing might seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be! I keep it simple and use a fertilizer that is added to my watering can every time I water. No tracking necessary. Find a balanced fertilizer, follow recommended guidelines, and watch your plants thrive.
5. Cultivating a Green Thumb Takes Time
There are SO many benefits to keeping plants inside your home—purified air, reduced stress, and improved sleep quality are just a few. Not to mention they are the most beautiful decor and really liven up any space.
Contrary to popular belief, having a green thumb isn’t an innate skill; it’s developed over time. Be patient with yourself as you learn your plants, understand their unique needs, and adapt your care routine accordingly. Every brown leaf or droopy stem is a lesson that contributes to your knowledge!!
Every plant parent starts somewhere, and with time, dedication, and a bit of trial and error, you’ll see your houseplant thrive! Stick around so that I can help!!
Happy planting!
